In Reply to: Audio Note´s P2 and 5881 tubes... posted by storelli on February 21, 2007 at 17:53:01:
Are you referring to the Audio Note P2 (Push-Pull) or P2 SE (Single-Ended) amp? I have a P2 SE that I bought in 1995 that I still use. A very nice amp that I've never had a problem with. I use the P2 SE with Audio Note AN/J speakers. As far as power tubes go, the stock tubes are Sovtek 5881. I've also used Phillips 5881/6L6 WGB and Tung-Sol 5881 (New Production) tubes. My feeling is that the Sovtek tubes have the most neutral sound with the P2 SE. The choice of input tube also makes a difference and I am partial to NOS Tung-Sol 6SL7 tubes in their various varieties. I have five pairs of different Tung-Sol types. Others I've used are Brimar, Phillips 5691, Raytheon VT-229, RCA 5691, and Sylvania VT-229. They're all good. It just depends on how you want to flavor your music.

and i'll be using it with Quads(!).... i know, i know...
anyway, i live in an apartment, have small children and only listen late at night(22:30 on) so it may work well. I'm a midrange guy, i like some "air" around the instruments, bass is not really a deal breaker for me, not that i don't like it , just not that important.
Thanks for the answers

I´ve used Quad ESL988 and a P2 SE in a 80 m2 room.
I don´t like highish volume levels, just 80-85 db average is fine. Now, the P2SE is running with Audio Note ANE speakers, in a complete audio note system in my living room, and Quads run with a 300B SET (Welborne DRD300B) and a EL34 PP (Ars Sonum Filarmonia)
I´d say that, with ESL988, in a smallish room, normal listening levels, 80-85 db average, 90-95 db peaks, the lower power limit is a good 300B SET. But with 8W and ESLs you won´t get full scale Mahler orgies.
18W are better of course, you gain a few dbs more
Art Dudley (stereophile) used for years a P2SE with Quad ESL989. He said that it is a great match, and I´d agree with him.
About tubes:
5881 is just a 6L6GB. In the P2SE you may use any 6L6 tube, including 6L6GC.
These are available everywhere.
6L6 Sovteks are fine and cheap
NOS Tungsol 5881 are marginally better and more expensiveThe most sonically important tubes are 6SL7s.
Depending of speakers and personal taste, I like Tung-sol (rounder), RCA (cleaner) and Sylvania (more extension on top)Hope it helps

Would you guys mind emailing me with more specifics on 6SL7's for the P2SE. There seem to be a lot of variations. Would like your sources for purchase as well.
Thanks,
nt
I've heard that the P2 SE is a great match with the ESL-57. I don't know about using it with other Quad models though.
