Hello everyone,
I have a pair of NOS Sylvania 6sn7s that I have been using successfully for about a year. Recently, one of them makes a very loud, 2 second static burst when I turn the amp on. After that, it plays just fine. I interchanged the left and right 6SN7 in each amp and the noise burst moves to the other channel. I am confident that the tube is the cause of the problem. I also put my old 6sn7s back in and there is no such problem.Anyway, I'm wondering if the noisy tube is still OK to use or if its problem indicates the onset of permanent failure. I would not want to damage my amp if the tube is on its way out. I just hate to scrap a tube if it's only a thermal/noise issue.
What do you think?

If the pins are clean, you have a tube that is close to shorting out the plate. Time to move on and get another $20 Sy GTB. On the other hand, your tube could fail and it really will not hurt anything if the sound you discribe is not hurting your speakers. Output tubes are what takes your amp out.

Since you brought up output tubes being destructive on their demise, I would like to ask another question. When an output tube eventually dies, doesn't it just take the main fuse out? The reason why I don't want to leave my amps on 24 hours a day is that I am afraid that when the output tube does go bad one day, I won't be here to shut it off.What happens when a 300B gives up the ghost? Should I worry about such a thing or can I leave them on 24/7?

I will not tell what to do. However leaving an expensive tube like a 300b burning 24/7 is going to use it up. Balance that against the excessive wear and tear of turning your amp on and off several times a day. If that would be your pattern otherwise.
You first question I can answer from seeing others who have had amps destroyed by an output tube going down. But only certain amps. Many will tell you that at least the final resistor will get fried. I have had tubes go down with no damage at all. Once again its all circuit dependent.
P.S. I collect SN7s, I saw a very nice looking NOS pair for $32. If you really want the best NOS NIB Sylvania GTBs go to these very classifieds. A guy named Len (an inmate) has NOS NIB for $45. It's worth it. His stuff is the best.

I appreciate everyone's opinion here. I usually turn the amp on in the morning and shut it down in the evenning. I suppose the output tube can fail when I turn it on too. I guess I'll just have to experience "how" it fails in my amp when it decides to go. Or anticipate it and change tubes early? Maybe I should get a tube tester.Thanks for the tip on the classified section. I'll check it out.
