I'm not a tube roller. I'm just interested in replacing worn out tubes. My Sonic Frontiers Power 1SE with KT88 tubes is four years old and I think ready for some new power tubes (one of them won't bias anymore -- although the sound is still good). It takes four KT88's
Recommendations? Any favorites?
Also, the amp also takes six 6922's. Should these also be replaced?

Thanks for the information. Always looking at saviing a few bucks.
Hi
I second the Shuguang KT88SC recommendation. A wonderful tube in my amp. I have at least 700 hours on mine with no trouble and they still test as new. Lots of discussion here if you search. You can get them from several sources. The cheapest is to keep an eye on ebay. There is currently a vendor there selling some. I won't post the link to avoid breaking any asylum rules. I am not associated with that vendor in any way nor have I dealt with them, but price is good for new tubes with the usual ebay caveats. Search for "kt88 gec" - you'll see the originals and the Chinese clones (Shuguang). They have smooth plates - no holes. That is the tube that is same as KT88SC - at least by photo... Also, EH KT88 are good tubes. A little hotter in the high end so good if your amp is a bit too rolled off. If your system already has lots of air and highs the EH might be a bit hot. Really, the KT88SC SHuguang is a great tube - can't say anything bad about it at all, many of us like them. Also, I think sponsor Jim McShane is stocking the Shuguang KT88/98. He is a great vendor and this tube while different from the KT88SC is also rumored to be quite good. All the Shuguang tubes of recent manufacture are quite reliable. Hey, for under $100 per quad it isn't that expensive an experiment....Good luck.
I bought some KT88s and 6550s from Jim Mcshane some months ago. He is very dependable and his opnion is in no way biased. I bought EH KT88s, Tung Sol 6550 Reissues, and GE 6550A JANs from him, and also got Penta/Shuguang KT88SC from Pentalab directly. They are all great tubes and you will enjoy every one of them in different way. FYI, my amplifiers are Jadis JA30s, which have two KT88/6550s per channel.
