I'm looking to replace the output tubes in a LA Audio integrated amp which uses a quartet per channel in parallel push-pull. What currently produced EL84/6BQ5 tubes have people tried and can recommend?
Follow Ups:
I replaced all of the Sovteks in my Almarro with Ei tubes (just for fun). I think they sound a little bit better than the Sovteks. YMMV of course.
Have a matched quad in my Scott 299A since December 2001...still working well and sounding good.
I like the JJs in both my ST-35 and Heathkit AA-30. I just replaced an aging quad of Sovteks with JJs in the ST-35 and it sounds great. Very balanced and detailed. Makes me want to listen for hours and hours.
Personally I prefer the JJ Electronics to the Sovteks - at least in my Leben integrated amp and in my previous Manley Stingray. A darker and fuller sound - more atmospheric sound and more body. The Sovteks are good tho but too me sound maybe faster and punchier but also lacking a bit in body.
I actually like the plain-old Sovtek EL84. That's what I'm using right now, and I have the Amperex, Tele, Mullard, etc. It's more neutral and detailed than Mullard, warmer than Tele, and more extended than Amperex.I also like the new Ei EL84. A bit smoother and less up-front than Sovtek.
