I was picking up on the comments on this board, where some people refer to solid state amps as "sand amps" because they do not use vaccum. But I am new at this tube thing, so I could have misinterperted.

too. I own one ADA 8 channel sand amp for my HT. The thought of buying seven 100 wpc tube mono amps makes me cringe to drive my Hales speakers. I still have my SET and PP tube amps for my main stereo listening. Welcome to the tube users forum(s) at the Asylum. John

I am happy, I have gone down the tube path...
as sand amps. Mostly guys who sold audio gear in the 70's for whatever reason.
Rumor has it that there are better design concepts for SS amps than those that have been traditionally used for the past forty years or so. An SS amp is supposed to be capable of producing sound just as good as any tube amp, provided that it's designed properly. My own preference for tube amps is due to my upbringing and personal experience, i.e., prejudice!
And it takes an attention to detail of matching transistors to precision paramaters. Something many manufacturers embracing quick and dirty profits don't want to do! Ray Hughes
