I have close to 100hrs on these tubes now.. These ae on of the best tubes I have ever owned. Open airy nice tonal balance warmth detail all the good things you want from a tube very very happy
Follow Ups:
My experience exactly. It took about 70 or more hours and then ... wow. Warm, rich, yet detailed with lovely highs. If you check on epay right now you will notice that some vendor is selling them again. Not from Penta, but I have the tubes you are talking about and the ones in the picture shure look exactly like mine. Solid plates, fat bottles, big flashing, side getters, shiny bases. I am not affilitated with whoever the seller is, haven't dealt with him or her, and I won't post the link, but they appear to be a good deal with the usual epay caveats. Just search for KT88 and you will spot them. Anyway, these are very nice tubes, wherever you source them. Also, I must have 750 - 1000 hours on my quad and I pulled them and tested them last month and they still read exactly as when I put them in. Seem to be well made. Finally, I have ordered a couple of matched pairs of the new Gold Lion KT-88 copy from Jim McShane. Couldn't resist (you know). They should be here next week. I will post a comparison with the Shuguang after I put 50+ hours on them.
Don,
Looking forward to your thoughts on the Gold Lion copy from Jim. I love my Penta's gona sell the stock GEC's soon. $$ ;^)
Hi,
Tubes still not here, but I will definitely be posting after they break in. One thing is that I run them in a custom PP amp in triode at very conservative B+ - I think it was about 330 - 340v. I remember the amp puts out about 20 watts/ch. in this configuration. This seems to be plenty of power for me. My speakers get silly loud before clipping. I could never stand to listen at that volume. Of course triode give you that wonderful rich sound. Anyway, my review will state all this, but I won't be able to say what they sound like in ultra linear at higher voltages which is probably what many run them at. Shure like the Shuguangs so it will be interesting if there is something better! I prefer them to the original 3-hole TS 6550 and EH KT88 that I have. More soon....

Not sure where they get the "C" but they are "smooth plate".
I love them in my Pro Logue 5 amp.
I thought SC stood for "strict copy" (of the original GEC KT88)
