Thanks everyone, I know more now than I did before posting. Eli, I e-mailed Jim McShane, looks like he'll be out of the office a while, I can wait. So, it's down to JJ's, Tesla's, Telefunken, or Valvo. Scratch the Sylvania's. Thanks for that one Sondek, appreciate the honesty, tell like it is. If anyone else would like to weigh in, thanks in advance. This is a huge sounding preamp, wall to wall, and everything in it's place. Glad I got it!
Follow Ups:
I just bought a pair of the JJ 6922's from Jim McShane to replace the microphonic Amperex 6922 USA white labels in my preamp, and so far I'm liking what I'm hearing. There is a little bit of hiss and they are a little harsh sounding, but it's early yet (5 hours), and I'm hoping that they'll relax a little as they settle in.
Hello McCormack, thanks for the info, I am interested in hearing from as many people as wish to contribute. I am going to buy a pair from Jim as well. Today I happened across a pair of NOS RCA 6DJ8's with made in W.Germany stamped on them, from a local repair store. Some feel that they could be made by Siemens. I put them in my AudioNote M2-B preamp and what a nice full, rich sound. Way better than the Sovtek's that had been in there. Now, we'll play them a while and see what happens. This hobby is getting interesting again!
Johnsan,You may have already discovered it, but there is an EXCELLENT general reference doc in the FAQ's titled "Joe's Tube Lore". It's really difficult to suggest a tube without knowing what kind of atributes you value or find most attractive. Joe's may help stimulate thought on that. Also, you'll find the JJ's, the EH's, and Tesla's attainable for the budget you laid out, but the Valvo's and Tele's will be very difficult to find NOS for those prices and if you do find them at those prices ... get a guarantee. Do consider Siemens, and any of the many brands that were owned by Amperex (Mullard, etc.). And don't forget about the 7308's - a whole nuther animal w/in the 6DJ8 family.
Good hunting and happy rolling,
Hello, Mike, I put up another post Saturday for questions on a pair of RCA 6DJ8's labeled W.Germany, and was curious about their origins. I bought them on a hunch that they may be Siemens of some sort. If you have any ideas about these tubes, please advise.
Thanks Mike, I will read. I do have another question pertaining to 6DJ8's and their associated "compatibilities", i.e., 6922's, e88cc's, 7308's, 6n1p's, etc. I've read where one is to check with the manufacturer on voltage compatibilities. Is there a reference for that as well, or is checking with the manufacturer the best way 'round this?
John,I could not recommend that you use a 6n1P in a circuit designed for a 6dj8/6922. Too many potential problems with that - at least without modifying the circuit. Okay, 6DJ8 = ECC88, and 6922 = E88CC, and 7308 = E188CC. These are the American and Euro designations. There's also a Russian clone of the 6922 called the 6h23, or 6n23. The n vs. h part has to do with exactly how you translate the Russian alphabet. Anyway, to answer your question, a 6922 or 7308 will work just fine in any circuit designed for a 6dj8, BUT a 6dj8 may not always work well in a circuit designed for a 6922. Chances are the 6dj8 would work just fine in a circuit designed for a 6922, but some designs, like the AI's would eat a 6dj8 in a matter of hours or days.
You're a great resource, thanks, Mike. I'll get to studying my options, and start rolling.
