I'm not sure exactly how to phrase my question, so I'll elaborate a little: I'm currently using 2 Audio Research D70-II amps as monoblocks, each stuffed with Ei KT90 type II tubes. Each amp is being used to drive only the midrange driver of my Spendors, in a tri-amped system. XO points are 700hz and 3Khz. I have the LF amps and HF amps' outputs balanced relative to the ARC D70/KT90s.
I'm thinking that I'm under utilizing the Ei KT90s, and that I should switch back to the SED 6550c, and save the Eis, (since they are made from unobtanium). However, if I do so, will the gain from the ARC D70s change with the change in output tube type, and will I then need to rebalance the gain from the other amps?
Follow Ups:
No. The gain of the two types you asked about is similar. In addition, if the amp has feedback the gain variations between tubes will be minimized to the point of being trivial. The most likely measurable change will be the output power, but that is not likely to be much. The sound quality will be different for sure.
Appreciate the response. Samir
