Good morning;
The 12X4 is a full wave rectifier, and cannot be used as a replacement for an EL-84. It is a good tube to use as a low power rectifier as it has an indirectly heated cathode. If I remember correctly, the Dyna PAS 2 used a 12X4 as its rectifier. Harry

I thought I had an old Kenwood receiver that used a 12X4 as a power tube. Obviously, I didnt know the circuit that well.

Well, the rectifier is a "power tube" the term actually means just what it sez - a power handling tube and the rectifier usually provides all the DC power the other tubes require. Better just to forget the word "power" and refer to rectifiers as such and the last tubes before the speaker as "output" tubes (power output tubes to be exact). Just being consistent with 70 years of electronics engineering - the "power tube" synomym for "power output tube" has only been around for 15 years or so.
