I just bought a matched pair of 6DJ8 Bugle Boys. One, made in 1960, has a large halo getter, and the other one, made in 1964, has a much smaller halo getter. I had expected the two tubes to be identical, and I don't know what to make of the difference. Is it significant or inconsequential? This is my first post, and I would appreciate your opinions. Thank you.

Thank you for your comments. The tubes are NOS, and came with a 30 day guarantee. I'll call him next week (ugh). I just think he should have at least mentioned the difference, because it sounnds like the assumption is that not only should the conductances match, but also they should be physically the same. (Also, I could pass them on, and I would feel compelled to note the difference.) Hopefully it was just a random oversight and he'll exchange them. Again, thank you for talking to me about this situation.
These are small-signal tubes, not power output tubes used in push-pull. It may well be that cosmetically matched tubes are not required in your amplifier if each tube shares Left & Right channel duty in following amplifier stages. Only if one tube is solely for Left channel with the other for Right channel thus both perform same duty per channels would a cosmetic match be desirable. And your tube seller may not know any more about tubes than you do, or even less.
I have both types you mentioned. I personally think the big getter ring type sound better. However, if you are stuck with 2 different kinds, it will be still okay, and you may not notice any difference.
Just enjoy your tubes and music.

Unfortunately, there are sellers (even with good record and reputation) who tend to supply totally different tubes in a "matched" pair. Before bying, I usually ask if the tubes in a pair are STRICTLY identical. They either say "yes" or "no" of don't answer at all.
To me, tubes aren't "matched" if the construction isn't identical. Does it mean they won't sound good or even the same, no.Plug them in and see what you get.
a match pair tubes sould be from same batch,
