When Chris Haedt was alive, he advised against this device.

A significant portion of the reason why was he tended to be a purist. Chris and I exchanged a number of emails over time, and I can tell you that he felt that since it was built with an 83 it should always have an 83. There were other concerns brought up in our exchanges, but not all of them were "function" concerns, a number were "form".So again - if anybody even bothers to read what I write anymore - what is going to happen when there are no more 83s? Or when they get to $75.00 or $100.00 each? Are all the testers going to be trashed?? Of course not - most people will plug in SS subs and the testers will live on.
Does anybody here have a better solution or answer than that?? Because that situation IS coming...
I hope so. I need one cheap:) Too bad those really nice AVO's aren't getting trashed too. Ditto on the triplett 3444 and heath TT1A.For the purist I am sure we could work out a way to use a different mercury tube rectifier....for a stupid fee of course as we would be dealing with a toxic substance and all.
Amazing how silly things are getting around here lately. If you want some entertainment you can always read Dennis's latest post channeled through the good doctor.
"For the purist I am sure we could work out a way to use a different mercury tube rectifier....for a stupid fee of course as we would be dealing with a toxic substance and all."I don't know what tube it could be. Is there any appropriately physically sized full wave rectifier with an impedance low enough to work properly? Maybe somebody smarter than me knows of one, because I really don't.
