that was manufactured 40-50 years ago, just because someone chooses to use it instead of sending it off to the dump.Tons of mercury are driving around in cars in the form of mercury switches, it's in homes in thermostats, and worse yet, TONS are sitting in old mine tailings, just waiting to get into the waterways.
Best way to keep that mercury out of the environment is to keep it sequestered in tubes! ;-)

Boo!
When that envelope breaks, the sh*t hits the fan.If you're going to use tubes with Hg inside the envelope, a supply of powdered Zinc or powdered Sulfur MUST be readily available. Either powder will sequester loose Hg.
Breathing the vapor loose Hg produces is a LOT worse than eating something with a low level of contamination.
To each his own. There'll be NO envelopes with Hg in them in my home.

I take it that you've eliminated all conventional fluorescent lighting from your home. As you know, even the "green" versions of this lighting source contain Hg. Unfortunately, I've not been able to get rid of the fluorescent fixtures in my home yet but there's hope...LEDs. They're now common in stoplights and decorative Christmas lighting. Can low cost domestic lighting be far behind? And yes, I realize that if I want to shell out something like $40-$60, I can purchase the equivalent of say a 60W incandescent bulb in pure LED form. Too expensive for me at the moment.
These things totally suck, if they're the ones I'm thinking of. Poor visibility, why couldn't the design be as bright? LEDs are inherently more efficient, make the damned thing visible! I've got one in particular, you can't judge it's status unless you're RIGHT on it.....
Steve,You are, of course, correct about flourescent illumination. It just so happens that all the lamps in my apt. are incandescant. The fixture outside my door is flourescent. ;~)
