There's no risk. 83s aren't plentiful, or they wouldn't have doubled/tripled in cost in the last year or so. I'm not saying they aren't available - I'm saying they aren't plentiful. 6CB6s and 6AW8s are plentiful - they sell for $2-$3.Think I'm shilling for my product? Fine. Go look in Alan Douglas' wonderful book on tube testers and other classic test equipment. Alan is an EXPERT. He shows you how to build your own 83 eliminator. He's done it (as have I) to MANY testers.
I have NEVER had a tester damaged by an 83 Eliminator, not a single one. The worst case scenario is a tester that needs calibration, and a VERY FEW have not been able to be calibrated (maybe 1 or 2).
I have used the 83 Eliminator in my own TV-7 for over 5 years with zero failures. It runs cooler, it calibrates just fine, it works great. I'd never go back to an 83, since they are getting scarce.
My statements above are all PROVABLE, they are not hearsay. I'd suggest a potential buyer make his decision on facts, not hearsay and rumor. Why would I sell something that blows up tube testers? Why would I do that?
Do you really have that low an opinion of my work and my integrity?

....I had no idea! I have an Eico 635 tube tester, and I never gave it a second's thought!As soon as I read your post I ran into my shop and unplugged it! I've been in the habit of just leaving it constantly on....ouch!
Do you know if mine has an 83 in it? (Yeah, I can take the back off and look....just if you already know).
If it does, should I replace it with an eliminator before it blows....when an 83 burns out, does it take the iron with it?

Sorry! I was out of the office for 3 days, and I didn't see your reply. In your case, you don't need the Eliminator - the 4 pin base was designed to plug in where an 83 used to - but since you had diodes simple replacements for them are all you need.
