I have had one in my tester B+K 650 with no problems. I save my 83 tubes for Music!!

Hi Benie:
Interesting post. Have never listened to 83's in amps for music. Only used them in tube testers. What amps have you used them in, how do they sound for you, compared with 5U4G, etc.?
I use one in my Preamp as my amps are S/S and that might change soon. I at first was using 5u4g and I tried them all (most) and I was happy but the designer of my preamp said I should try some other rectifer tubes as I keep telling him I was again trying another 5u4g.
He said the 83 + 80 make good rectifers and I should try them as any 5v Rectifer will work in my preamp.
He had a 4pin adapter to fit my socket and I was off an running. I also believe it was Ed Sawyer that posted here as well saying the 83 is a good one.
Well I pretty much find it better than any 5u4g that I had used. I found the midrange to be much nicer and high end to also be so sweet. I was going to say the tube has a very good tonal balance but it is a little light on bass. But I find it to be much more open with lots of air.
I havn't tried the 80 yet but I will. So as it is I go back and forth sometimes between an 83 and a Valve Art 274B which I find very smiular to the 83 but with better bass.
Can one vacuum tube rectifier of sufficient capacity have a different midrange and high frequency sound than another? We pride ourselves in filtering the holy crap out of the rectifier output. Does anyone have a theory on why a 5U4 could sound different from an 80 in a(presumably low current draw) preamp?
We all know rectifiers have an internal resistance, which causes a voltage drop.Bass frequencies require more current to reproduce than mid and high frequencies.
Therefore, rectifier tubes may act as a dynamic equaliser, limiting the bass when under heavy load.
This should only apply to power amps, not preamps.
I guess it's like any other Tube, many have a different sound. as diffrent 5U4G will have a different sound.
Maybe the design of my preamp shows it more. The designer of my preamp says that a tube rectifer change in my Preamp will show more than in an Amp, with the amp change being 70% of what the preamp is. It is the 83 I am using not the 80.
