I'm using JJ E34L's in my Luxman amp now, however with my new speakers (Vandersteen 1C's) I am getting a touch too much lowmid bass response. I am thinking of changing to a different EL34 type to get a more balanced sound. Any recommendations? Thanks.

"I am getting a touch too much lowmid bass response" could be an opportunity to move your speakers out from the back wall and enhance their imaging at the same time.Cheers, Craig

They were rather close to the back wall, and I did move them and this definately improved things. Thanks. It looks like I might have a set of SED EL34's for sale soon.
...but have to say that the SED winged C's are superior IMHO (I switched back). The only thing is a slight tip up in the sound with the SEDs in the upper mids, which probably won't bother you as much with those speakers as with mine. The groove Tubes don't have that, but otherwise the SEDs are fine.
I was thinking about the SED's. I remember listening to them once and noticing they didn't have that punchy mid bass like the JJ's do.. which sounds good but just gets overpowering with my speakers/amp. So I ordered the SED =C= EL34's off e-bay. We'll see what happens. Thanks.
...not overblown in the midbass. The mids are nice and open with good inner detail and imaging. There is a slight rise in the upper mids which hasn't gone away, and the treble is extended without sounding distorted. The soundstage is wide.I think you will find them to be a good match.
There is a lot of nice ones out there and my personal favorite is the JJ kt77 if they made the pins larger..Sonically that tube eats every el34 mullard I have for breakfast and this is including my nos el34 metal bases.Another one is the sed el34 and the EH 6Ca7 is very good one broken in.
Micheal, your taste in current production EL34 certainly parallels mine-SED Flying C, Groove Tubes, etc. I'm giving some serious thought to the JJ KT77. Been hesitent due to reading about the pin problems. Do you have any idea if JJ has yet to resolve that problem? Many thanks!

Some say its fixed and some say no..I would definitely make sure you have the seller hand select the tubes even if it costs a couple bucks extra..They do sound very good and its just a shame about these issues.

My friend Jim Mcshane has the EH 6ca7 fat bottles and you might want to pick up a quad of those becuase they are really an amazing tube also..What I like about the FB is they sound and act more like the 6L6gc/KT88 and they really are perfectly made..They dont cost very much and even if you get the JJ Kt77s later its nice to have tubes to roll and compare..They are a very impressive looking tube and I run them in my marantz 8 and Im redoing a pair of marantz 2s for a gentleman and they sound fabulous in there to.
Changing back to the proper pin size was alleged to be happening in May. That's fine. What about the existing stocks?
Even if they have "fixed" the pins at the factory it'll be a long time before all the small pin tubes are flushed out of the system. It takes months for the tubes being produced right at this time now to make it to the USA.There were other problems besides the pins too.
Try the superb quality 6CA7 big bottle EH. It's quite a good tube, a lot of people have tried it recently and the feedback has been wonderful!
but I'd REALLY like to try the KT77. I tried the fatbottle EH and they are well made and sounded good, but not quite what I'm "searching" for, which I hope I'll recognize when I hear it!

Give those FB more time becuase they really are a totally different tube after 50 hours of playing time.
Oh now come on Jim..What is wrong with crooked bottles and flashing where there no getter.ROFL
The original EL34 amp I built for my pal Richard (the one on the site) likes fatboy GEs better than anything, but they're a bit problematic stability-wise.It's good to have another recommendation for him.
Thanks,
The JJ EL34L may be hitting you with midbass with the Vandy 5A but I have been using a thick pin quad and have compared them with the SEDs. In my system which uses much smaller speakers the JJs have the nicest midrange and there really isn't anything lopsided in terms of tonal balance VSA VR2s their smallest floorstander. I use a 40 watt integrated with crazy good inputs and drivers. B309 Marconiphone inputs 12AT7s, and right now RCA gray glass VT231s for drivers. I also really like the KT-77 but talk about punchy.
The Seds are somewhat starker but will likely mate well with the Vandys they are are clean and also pretty linear sounding. I don't think they will dissapoint you. I have a well used quad you should have asked.
I preferred the JJ's to the SED's on headphones a while back. Also, I was using smaller speakers before as well, and the JJ's seemed to help add warmth to the sound of the small drivers by lifting up the midbass. I am concerned that the SED's might not be as good though, as you have found, and so I am not really sure if I want to make the switch. I have read that the SED's are more detailed though, is that true?

What you said about punchy is the main characteristic I find of EL34 tubes period..Thats why I adore the 6L6 and family so much and the e34Ls are nice in the mids but I know where your comming from.
