Last night I received some older EL84 (6BQ5) NOS power tubes for a different amp and was very struck by how very quiet and liquid they sounded.
I also have an Eastern Electric Minimax power amp in a diferent system that is all EE, phono, pre & power playing through Vandersteen 1C's which are 90 dB efficient. I would love to find a 6BM8 that offered that same quality that I heard last night. I have had european Motorolas and presently Svetlanas and was hoping for a reccomendation for a reasonably priced (no more than $100 the quad)roll that would make things a bit more liquid.
Follow Ups:
Try Telefunken.
I'm using NOS Phillips ECL82 's from thetubestore.com for $24 each.
I really like these. I bought 2 sets.
I also have Mullards ECL82's and these sound a bit "buttery" smooth. Depending what I have in the Mini Max Pre dictates which sets I use. The Mullards are used tested by Michael Marx at SND tube services. I have not tried any new versions.
I'm also using them with a NOS $$$$ Mullard GZ34. So, I have $200 NOS tubes
in this bugger and It sounds excellent.
It's too bad Alex won't put the BB back up. I complained to Bill awhile ago.
Not cool.
