picked up some 1955 5814wa's the other day -with box's
just installed-letting them get settled -so far i like
Follow Ups:
One of great tubes in the 12AU7/ECC82 family. For me, this mid-1950s vintage CBS/Hytron 5814A (I've got a couple of early ones that are straight up 5814s) has been perhaps the most consistent performer across different systems. I can always count on it to make the short list of favorite tubes in the linestage of my CJ PV-12A regardless of the system this preamp finds itself in.
these improved my system almost as much as the first swap i did-stock jj's for triple mica black plates-stunned me with the huge improvement-these cbs tubes did the same thing -a nice improvement over the best i had so far-very happy :)now i just have to tell myself mullards wont be any better and save my money-lol
Oh yes, Mullards will be smoother than the CBS, great tubes, but with less high end emphasis and a smoother bass. Like I said, the CBS are kind of "punchy" while remaining musical (not a bad thing). At least in my system.... The Raytheons sort of fall in the middle. Depends on what you like and your gear of course....
Ahhh the CBS Hytron 5814....one of my personal favorites. If you get your hands on pre 1959 or so Raytheon 5814's...those are the only tubes I like better. My main pair of Raytheons is from 1951. I have a pair of 1952's as well for backup. Of course this in the first stage of my PP power amp. In your circuit/application who knows? However, the CBS is a punchier tube, while still remaining musical. The Raytheon is smoother. It has all the detail of the CBS, but a smoother presentation in my system. That said, the CBS is a great tube, I have kept a couple of pairs around. It and the Raytheon are my two favorites by quite a bit and I have tried many of the "best" types. Never know when you will change rooms or speakers or source or something and need a different sounding 12au7 type. Happy listening...
thanx-
if the mullards sound like brimars i will skip them-
i have some 13d5 brimars -one went microphonic after 20 hours or so- i also thought they were slow and soggy-
these cbs/hytrons do everything right in my system-
now i have to start looking for another backup pair
Hi
Sorry, but I sold off all but two pairs - otherwise I would be glad to help you out. However, the two I kept came from a guy in Salt Lake City (I think). Email me offline and I will send you his email address. Perhaps he has more. I seem to recall they were, $40 - $50 per pair and really nice. He was a good, honest vendor. He called them ANOS, but I doubt they were used..... A 1955 and a 1956 pair as I recall. I haven't used them in some time. The early 50's Raytheons rule in my amp now... If he can't help you I may have a couple of "orphans" around that might match up fairly well. What are you using them in?
you dont allow email-thats what it says when i try-
thanx for the offer anyway
Hi
sorry, I think I was able to just save the preferences to allow email now......try again if you wish...
