I just found out that the Groove Tubes people have rejected an entire shipment of the 12AX7M "Mullard clones" (it's not on their web page now either). They were not happy with the quality of the tube, so they shipped 'em all back. They are made in China BTW.That's a first class way to handle it! Are you reading/listening JJ??
If you read some of my earlier posts, you may remember the reject rate on those was pretty high, and I was hoping they'd get better. Well, it looks like that shipment wasn't what they wanted.
Anyway, the bad news is those will be very scarce for some time as a result. I was told 90-120 days before the next resupply.
Also, a kind of important suggestion - remove the tube pin protector from any GT 12AX7Ms you have on hand. They tell me it was responsible for some glass cracks near the bottom of the tube.
Follow Ups:
Maybe the samples I auditioned would have been rejects (but isn't this screening part of GT's premium price?), or maybe they just didn't get enough "foo foo dust" to make their magic. Regardless, there are many less expensive new production tubes that are vastly superior in my estimation. What I want to know is why all the vendors on the Asylum say the Ei's are crap because of high rejection rates, but it's okay for a $24 Groove Tube 12AX7??? Was GT not screening these tubes or what??? Tell me again, what was that premium price for???? Must be the Foo Foo Dust!!!!

It is really the only modern 12AX7 with a "warm" top end. If you don't like them that's fine, don't buy them. But a very large number of people like them a lot, are you saying they're all mistaken?

First off, who said the reject rate was okay? I never did, and I don't recall anyone else who did. What I did say was that the reject rate was too high, but I hoped it would come down - and I thought it would since the GT was only in production a relatively short time. The Ei stuff was good at one time and deteriorated to the sorry state where it is now. If you don't see those two scenarios as different circumstances I don't know what to tell you.
And if you opted to pay $24.00 for them that was your choice. They could have been purchased from some Asylum sponsors for less than that.

Come on, isn't this a bit over the top? There was likely nothing wrong with the tubes you heard, you just didn't like them in that particular application.
...Two of these fail now. I bought six of them when they first came out. Both failed suddenly at about 800 hrs of use (on separate occasions). They worked fine one day and the next day one section tests dead (frown).
Too bad as they sound pretty good while they work...

Perhaps that re-issue TungSol 12AX7 will fill the gap.
