Well, I guess if you are considerring 300B's, WE 350B's would not be TOO much more...Are there any new make 350Bs that have similiar sonics to the WEs or National Unions?
I like the suggestion about triode wired 807's, it would definately be a unique tone with the interstage transformer.
Follow Ups:
...object guitar amp; in my first version I singled ended a 6L6GC triode-strapped with choice of clean or overdriven 12ax7's feeding a 12at7 driver (internally parraleled); the tone is just jaw dropping gorgeous. Now, in the second version, I decided I wanted a larger true triode for the single-ended part for the on-stage monitor speakers (also for recording) and then a London Power Power-Scaling boost stage (I call it GIG stage) with 300B's in PP driven by a phase splitter insterstage transformer.
It's funny; my son Max likes to play both clean and distorted, but even in distorted there's a line between clean distorted and rattly or grungy distortion, which is not what we want. And I would rather go with pure triode than tetrode/pentode triode strapped, even though the 6L6GC is GREAT tube.
So, is there a better sounding bigger triode than the 300B, directly heated? The 2A3 is too small, the 807 is not a true triode (unless I'm misremembering), the 845 is too big a jump up. Plus, I'm still not sure if triode-strapped pentodes sound just as good as true 300B's. The 6V6 is not enough power, the other suggestion likewise (can't remember it offhand, have to go to sleep).
So, to rephrase the question: is there a sweet sounding DHT true triode a bit more powerful than the 300B, or would I have to jump from the 300B to RF tubes like the 813 or 845?
Thanks. :)

THey make very good transformers, and a couple of posters on that forum are building some very beautiful, triode based guitar amps.Your first SE to SE stage could be viewed as a driver stage. With a 300B final on that stage, it should be easy to drive PP 211's or 845's.
