5814a is a special 12au7, likely ruggedized and select. JAN/Phillips sound refined and full in circuits I've heard. Unless run hard I'd expect a 12au7 should be an easy swap.
Follow Ups:
The 5814A uses a little more heater current.
...so, would I likely damage a 12AU7 in a curcuit designed for the 5814A?thanks,
No, a 12AU7 will sub for a 5814 just fine.
good to know, thanks!
..I really like the Phillips tubes. No noise, microphonics, etc. Just wondering if there are any voltage/heater issues if I used 12AU7's instead.(the unit is a Wyetech Labs Coral)
I'm unfamiliar with your amp.
I've been substituting varieties of 12at7, 12au7, 12ay7 for 12ax7's in audio amps like Fisher 500 and recently a simple se circuit, without much more consequence than distortion or more often "improvement" with the lower gain tubes.
Like tubes are robust and overbuilt circuits forgiving of such experimentation -- at least in my experience.
