as well as Art Audio balanced VPS/Dual Mono preamp.
Other possible choice would be the VTL 5.5 /7.5 or BAT preamps. An SCM 20 active is a revealing monitor as you well noticed.
You ought to save and get a quality front end kit.Anything less, they'll let you know.

yes but new Nagra PLL costs 7.500$ and new Art Audio VPS is 4.000$. Don't know about VTL and BAT but I doubt that the used ones are going to fit into my low budget (1.500 s/h)how's about some of the currently hyped DACs with volume knob (and maybe an extra line input or two...) - benchmark or similar?
If Kevin Carter of K&K audio can custom make the preamp that matches to the impedance of SCM20 and can come in withint your budget, it might worth it.I have tried the AA Vinly Reference phono stage ( the basic design is done by him, I believe ) with the SCM 20 active. The front end was Origin Live table with the Shelter 901 which helps to keep the treble civility in check.
Even using a Linn solid state preamp, it was excellent. It's a hybrid design, but it seems to lessne the analytical nature of the ATC monitors without sacrificing what they offer.

You spcified tube units.
The Benchmark is a solid state design and it was for the most part deisgned for the pro use.
I highly doubt it'll give you the effect you want from the active SCM20s.What is your current source?
Without having the proper souce, it'll be even more difficult to dial your system in.
thanks for a good tip, i found someone selling a tube DAC with line stage (unhoused but connected and tested) which sounds exactly what i need.... just to check if impedances and sensibilities are matching and there we are!
