I'm going to be in Tokyo next week and will stay for a two weeks. Hope girlfriend gives me some spare time to visit some audio shops. I have read about Japanese SET gear and would be very interested in visiting some audio places to see and hear high-end Japanese tube and analog stuff and good used LP record stores.Any help will be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Somebody emailed me the following link, and I want to share it with you all:http://www10.big.or.jp/~dh/codo/index.html
Just wondering if some of you fellows know any other places like this.
Thanks to everyone.

Disk Union, in Tokyo (2 locations) for used Jazz in pristine condition ("used" in Japan often means opened and looked at, but never played). There you will find Japanese pressings of records you never thought you would see, and your friends will hate you for it. If you don't mind spending 30 or so bucks on a magazine, check out "Analogue", "Stereo Sound", "Tube Kingdom", etc. They are comprehensive and entertaining, even for those who don't read Japanese- the photos are wonderful. If you do indeed like Jazz, find one of the many Jazz "coffee houses" which are often crammed with vintage vinyl. You sip whiskey or beer and request what recordings you would like to hear. The hi-fis in these places are frequently amazing- vintage JBL's, Tannoy's, and Altecs, with single-ended or push- pull tube amps. Great way to spend an evening...

お茶の水駅前店 Ochanomizu ( 2 stops from Akihabara )
神保町店 Jimbocho ( Japanese pops, avoid!! )
池袋店 Ikebukuro
下北沢店 ShimoKitazawa
吉祥寺店 Kichijoji ( 2 stores; Jazz is in Audio Unions bldg, 2nd Fl)
国立駅前店 Kokubunji
町田店 Machida-shi
横浜店 Yokohama
Tokyo Jazz bars/coffee shops are a dying breed; most of the places reviewed in magazines now are well outside of Tokyo; places in Tokyo I've sought out that still play vinyl I can count on the fingers of one hand
Tokyo places won't be as liberal with letting you make requests; MEG in Kichijoji has only just recently allowed patrons to TALK to each other, and that took a change of management ( ! )
A cool night out; but be warned; Tokyo-ites chain smoke in bars, you'll feel the effects the next day if you're a non smoker

Thanks for the corrections/ additions, and it is true that I have had my best Jazz coffee house experiences in Japan's smaller cities ("Bokunen", in Kanazawa, for instance...)
