While I have owned several pieces of tubed equipement for about 3 years, I still consider myself a tubes newbie. Is there a book (preferable) or online resource that goes through tube basics, for example addressing triodes vs pentodes, triode vs ultralinear, class A vs AB (I think I understand that one), OTL amps, S.E.T.s, passive vs active preamps and the very basics of preamp design, biasing etc. without necessarily being geared towards kit building. I realize that this very website is a great resource, but I was hoping for a resource that could be read cover to cover, hence my preference for a book.
Thanks.Sincerely,
Follow Ups:
It's titled "Theory and Application of Electron Tubes".It's the best tube theory book I've seen. Was dated 1952, but has been reprinted by Antique Electronic Supply.

The now-defunct Sonic Frontiers, manufacturers of some reasonably decent tube amps, put out a short well-written book called "A Taste of Tubes" that they distributed for free in the late 90s. This book was written expressly for newbies and goes into just about all aspects of tube amp history, design and operation. I have a copy that I have read and re-read many times and it's a very enjoyable and informative little book with lots of great photos and easily understood diagrams. I haven't a clue where to get a copy today, but I would urge you to at least try. Also, you may want to go to both the Upscale Audio and Vacuum Tube Valley websites. Both of these sites have general tube amp information for beginners. The VTV site has an "FAQ" that goes into the various tube amp types such as Class A, AB, Ultralinear and SETs, and also explains the advantages and limitations of these designs. IMO the best source of information is our fellow Tubes Asylum inmates.

Great read! Thanks for the link.
No, this book isn't the greatest technical reference, but it will give you some idea of what was going through one particular designer's mind & the book is a pretty interesting read.Pick it up on Ebay for about $10, read it, & sell it again for the same amount (or keep it & help out folks who need a particular VTL schematic now and again :) ).
