Wonder if this means i should commision a 6922 based pre instead of an octal...
Follow Ups:
I tested 6J5 (metal) and not only are they inexpensive with low demand, the tubes sounded excellent next to the glass counterparts.
Like Jimmy says, if you're building the 6J5 (G,GT) is a good option - loads of old stock very cheap, plus CV versions and 6P5GT that sound really good. Even better is the 2C22 (7193) which is just fabulous sounding (as good as it gets, in my opinion) and looks wacky with its twin top caps. Plus you can swap the sockets and use 76, 37, 56 or 27. Loads of really good sounding possibilities very cheap. You can go loctal with 7N7 and 7AF7 but using the single triodes gives you more choice if you have the real estate.
Why would you go 6922 versus an octal? I don't see any advantage, and I find the 6SN7 (and similiar tubes like 12SN7, 7N7, etc.) to sound better then the 6922. There's also not one modern production 6922 worth a lick.
