I have seen headphones that insert into Hickok (and other) tube testers to test for microphony. Is this test reliable? Thanks for any info.
Follow Ups:
I bought one of those off eBay to use with my 539C. Have tested about 150 tubes and found 3 that were noisey. They seem to work great, but do get rather uncomfortable after about 30 minutes of use.
Before his untimely death I asked Chris Haedt about using the headphones that were being sold on eBay as being OEM parts for a 539c to listen to tube noise. His answer was an emphatic NO as follows.."That headphone thing is a load of BS. You were supposed to hook the noise jacks to the antenna terminal of a radio receiver--not to headphones. Who wants to hook high voltage to something you place on your head? No one I know takes that noise test seriously. You need to check for noise in an amp."
I never pursued it any further. I sure wish he was still here.....
I can attest to Chris' warning. I own a Hickok headset and have been electrically shocked on more then one occassion. Testers can have potentially lethal voltages, so I got lucky. The headsets can pick up noise and microphony to a very limited degree, but it is no where near as sensitive as a good line stage.
Thanks........he would certainly know. I also wish he were still here.
These work, but only with certain models of testers. I prefer to install the tube in an amp, let it warm up for 15 min or so, and thump the glass while listening.
