although they do have an add on MM stage (at least the Three does - don't know about the One and Two). I have an MC cartridge so that won't work for me.Regarding your other questions - the One is basically an amp with a passive line stage. It has no provision for driving an external amp.
I have been driving the Five with the Three and my SP10. In some ways I prefer the Three, it's certainly quieter, and tonally more adaptable to tube changes - the SP10's tube demands limits your selection to a few very rugged tube types.I think you could well enjoy using the Three with your present amp but I will always opt for a tube pre-amp over a SS one - they are just generally tonally more rich than SS. While I prefer tube amps they can be a hassle and the difference is not as great, depending on your room, speakers, and expectations. The one problem which could raise its head with the Three is its output impedence - its on the high side and you would want to make sure it matches your amps imput impedence.
As to using the MF as a pre with the Five as an amp, I don't know.....If I was forced to make a choice, based on my experience so far with the One, I would go for the Four.
But all of this is moot if you don't have an add on phono stage or a MM cartridge and are willing to go with PL's add on board. Of course you could always take the phone stage out from your MF via its tape out (assuming it has one).
Hope that helps a bit.
Follow Ups:
Thanks again Chuck. So it sounds as though it would be better to go all tube. I have a Graham Slee Gold Era V phono stage so I could use that.I only have a high output MC Dynavector DV20X but am planning on getting the Cartridgeman Musicmaker moving iron cartrdige eventually which has a high output. Is there a great difference between the One and the Three/Five combo?
Is it worth the extra money?
is that I have put the One in a closet as a spare. Sound wise the 3/5 combo is much more likely to appeal to the typical audiophile, if for no other reason than that you can endlessly tinker with the sound by changing tubes in both the amp and the pre-amp. The differences are easily heard and, within the power capacity of the amp, the ability to make these changes will allow you to drive different sounding speakers and sources. Unlike when you buy SS stuff - you plug it in, it works (you like it) or you plug it in and it doesn't work (you don't like it) and you have to sell it.The One is much simpler to dial in (fewer choices) and as powerful. Its just not as detailed. Probably an excellent purchase for someone with little angst but somewhat bright speakers or bright ancillaries who is looking to take the edge off. Don't take this wrong, this is not a dull amp. Its quite 'musical' and resolving, its just not razor sharp and will not sound like any SS stuff you have ever heard. When I first set it up my initial reaction was, "you know, I could live with this".
Whether it's worth the difference pricewise, I guess I'd have to check my check book balance and see how much extra loot I had available. I would also have to consider whether or not I would be tempted, ultimately, by say a different speaker purchase, to change out the amp for something better suited for the new speakers. That's always a risk in my house. :-)
Thanks again Chuck. It sounds like the One would do me as my system does tend towards the brighter end of the spectrum, hence my interest in the Prima luna's.If the One is just as powerful as three and five then that would do me.I'm not a detail freak, I feel there's enough already in my system and would like a little more involvement and a weightier or fuller sound.
I'll try to ask the dealer near me if I can audition in my house, although living int UK I doubt it.
