Prospective buyers have to pay $250/4 hrs for a demo! Any inmates in Philly want to volunteer to check it out and tell us what the big deal is??Keith

getting people out of $250 a pop to listen (who knows what they actually do to you when you show up) then to actually sell the amps to a knowledeable buyer.
The amp used to belong to the clarinetist on Jazz at the Pawnshop.

Any Lirpa owner can accomplish the same effects with sufficiently dramatic room tweaks.
... didn't realize that Norway was a major undersea/naval power.I am guessing that they used the amps for heat down below, as well?
lots of incidents involving fishing rights over the years. A friend served on a Norweigen destroyer for a couple of years as a targetting officer. They seemed to have a few toys at their disposal then (late 1980's).Amps on a sub could be used for anything from sonar to comunications applications.
Not to give any credence to this hilarious ad, but it is possible.
They have not surpassed, but surpressed all competition! Was this part of a Norwegian plan to reassert Viking dominance of the North Sea .... through duplicitous use of a NATO partner's (Ampex) technology? ......... Now, what I really want to see are pictures of these things.
intermittent pinging sound.
Bizarre... and amusing. The claim made that they are "The best amplifiers of all time bar none, etc etc" in the 8 WPC class is a clue; anyone well acquainted with Big $ audio and the people who buy it would know how poorly the "best" word goes over. That the guy seems to think Ampex and Amperex are the same company, or at least that a tube LABELED Ampex was made by Ampex rather than just LABELED Ampex ("They were made by Ampex, or at least have a lot of Ampex tubes") is VERY revealing. Put simply, these are 8 watt amps. You can get pretty damn convincing sound at the 8 watt level with the Bottlehead Parabees for $1600. If your budget stretches to $25,000, you could likely erase the thought of a $250 audition from your mind without a 2nd thought.
I would be willing to audition Parabees for a six pack of Pilsner Urquell. That might last four hours, but probably not.
.
I wasn't holding the Parabees as a paragon of unequalled excellence. I meant that $1600 gets you "pretty damn good" in the rarefied 8 WPC universe, and that someone trying to sell some funky salvage amps for $80,000 (no pix, weird details, no feedback on the site)has some serious cojones trying to charge ANYTHING for an audition, let alone $250. Yes, yes, I know that the Fantasia-spec system could be considered salvage, along with any Western Elec. etc. These submarine amps could be treasures.... but they could also be boatanchors in the most literal sense of the term.... 2nd best to a small block chevy for keeping something moored.
Somebody out there thinks my amps aren't the paragon of unequalled excellence?! OK, so maybe I would settle for a Heineken bomber, but you only get about 45 min.
I guess we are having a disconnect type misunderstanding-- I think the Parabees are Phenomenal amps. They are great and are better than many amps costing TEN TIMES as much. I thought you were saying that they sucked! Please pardon my miscommunication. I envy your amps and would love to own a pair.
ought to be good for more than a few mins....

Come on over...And, if you would like to buy my complete system for 80K, shipping is FREE;-)
Hey, I would almost consider splitting $250 just to see what the heck they are. But seriously, I bet some government paid almost that much money for them originally, but this guy seems a little bizarre to ask that much for them, let alone charge perspective buyers to audition.
Interesting, almost everyone I have talked to who has listened to "industrial" amps designed for transducers other than traditional loudspeakers has commented that they were good, but not so interesting to listen to. That said, I have some direct coupled OTL Krohn-Hite monoblocks I have to listen to at some point.
Allright Doug, you got my attention. Let's hear about them.Geez, where do you find this stuff?
Actually, these seemingly obscure Krohn Hite amps are fairly common laboratory amps designed to drive any manner of transducer. They are model DCA-10 (R version is rackmount) and were made until fairly recently. I think a lot of people still use them as K-H still wants 100 bucks for a service manual, but I downloaded it for free online from a Penn State physics dept. page, I believe.
Per the manual, the amp can be used into any load of 10 ohms or more, although they recommend for the rated 10 watts over 1hz to 500Khz with given distortion specs, that the load be between 600 and 1Kohm. It says the amp will handle reactive loads (ie. a speaker) but there is no telling whether or not it will really sound decent driving a speaker, let alone remain stable under such low loading.
Output tubes are 6GT5, I believe.
It's quite interesting to see a tube amp with flat frequency response of DC to 1Mhz!
There are some vintage 600ohm drivers out there, both electro dynamic and pm. One of these days I going to have to come up to PA and check your collection and Douglas' porch.
I might even let you inside too!welcome anytime, just warn me.

but that's my opinion. I wonder what they really are too. Split the $250 with you...

Hey DougBut, what if it really sound so good that I can't resist buying?? Do you have a trailer like this that I can transport it home?
if I can't fit it into my Dodge, there is no way I am going to be able to get it in the door anyway. Which reminds me to make 'note-to-self' to specify 46-inch doors for my next construction.Hey, if you can't resist, then you *MUST* buy it. If you find a good trailer for the amps, I am sure my Dodge can pull it.
