I have a Sunfire vacuum tube preamp, which I really dig. I substituted the stock Sovtek 6922's for Electro-Harmonix ones, and they sound great, but is there a lower noise tube even than this? I did a search here and some people seemed to like Amperex, which are only NOS I assume. Are these a step up?
Follow Ups:
I have the Gold pin version in my pre amp and I love 'em. Do think they are noisy in your unit? The EH has a big wide open sound and great bass control and extension. I didn't find them noisy but my pre amp may not be as fussy about that.
No, I actially do not think they are all that noisy. I can turn the volume ALL THE WAY up and it makes no more noise than it does with the volume all the way down -- that seems pretty quiet! But there is a bit of audible noise at all levels that I do not get from my Rotel pre/pro (which connects to the same amp and speakers). I have NO IDEA if this has anything to do with the tubes, or just the Sunfire in general, and it's only noticable when you are right next to the speaker. And the sound that comes from the Sunfire is GLORIOUS.Anyway, thanks for your feedback -- I think I'll stay with what I have.
If the pre amp uses an IEC power inlet you might try a new power cord. I find that as I improve power cords noise levels do drop. I have had good results with the Custom Power Cord Co. products or you might try one from VH Audio. Chris is well known here and his products are well liked and seem to offer a high value. You might also try some tube dampers like the Herbie's and get the pre amp on some sort of isolation base. It will really sing then.
