Most equipment is speced at 117 VAC. Generally tolerances are +/- 10%. Utility companies are usually within +/- 5%. So if your voltage is within 5% of 117 volts I wouldn't bother. If that surge protector is one intended for a computer don't use it for audio equipment.

What does a computer surge protector do to current to make it undesireable to use in audio?
They are full of low grade parts that will limit dynamics. Go to Jon Risch's website and download the instructions on how to build your own. Or if you wish you can buy them premade or as a kit.
I will take a look. I am starting to get into DIY, so it might be fun to try something like that.
