In Reply to: What's the deal with these? "RCA Re-issue 12AX7's?" posted by BrianM23@Msn.Com on September 02, 2003 at 22:04:44:
for anything they could send. Websites, reviews, mag articles, etc. All they'd say is it was a good tube. I tried to buy some - but they'd not take paypal and my two experiences with buying from Australia prevent me from trying anything other than paypal.
Sorry I don't have better news. Fran
Follow Ups:
Sounds sketcky to me... Thanks for your help though! I do appreciate it:-)I will say this - I have had nothing but highly positive experiences with Australian tube sellers on ebay. Some of the nicest folks I've ever met are from Australia and I've done several auctions with several prominent Aussie tube sellers! A couple of them actually threw in FREE tubes! A Sylvania VT-231, a 6SN7GT, and a VT229/6SL7GT to name a few! Very nice people AND - Australia produced some of the best valves ever made, namely AWV [Amalgamated Wireless Valve Co.] - REALLY nice stuff!! It helps me that some people are afraid to buy from the land down under, as the best stuff usually sells for much less than it would if it were sold here in the States.
I guess that's why it bothers me to hear bad things about Sellers from AU! However, I went to another auction run by these same people for the same set and # of 12AX7 tubes, days later from the one in question, and guess what? Same thing - Double the price! Yes, the opening bid went from $20.00 to $40.00 overnight!! No photos, no info., no meaningful response... Geez! Probably just rebranded tubes from Russia - - Man, I hate the bullshit:-0!
Thanks!
and Take Care,
Thanks for the followup. When I mentioned not wanting to buy from Australia unless I could use paypal - I didn't mean that the people weren't great or that I'm afraid to buy from them. It's just that getting a money order, bank check or Western Union is a real hassle for this 'ol guy.I'll take the blame for the hassle part. It might be my bank only - but if I remember correctly they charge something like $25 for a check going to Australia. The post office here wouldn't sell me an international postal money order because Australia isn't in their big book of places that accepts them. I'd not mind sending a personal check but my experience is it takes over a week to get there, another three to clear, then another week for the item to get to me - so it takes well over a month for a transaction.
Actually one of the best deals I ever got on tubes was some NOS Siemens E83CC. In fact I ended up buying eight. The seller wanted US cash though and I didn't want to stick that much in an envelope going through customs. As it turned out - he had bought something from a guy in the US and owed him a load of money. I sent a check to the guy here - he confirmed receipt with the seller in Australia and he in turn sent the tubes.
I know paypal gets a lot of heat here and I'd crank it up to if I ever had a problem. So far all I've had to do for US or other countries is a few key clicks and the item is in my hands in a week, two max.
Funny you should mention getting freebies from them - the seller I bought the E83CC from threw in two NOS Miniwatt 12AX7s made in Australia.
Maybe if I see those "new" AX7s posted enough times - I'll send a check. Thanks for the update. Fran
They fed you a line of BS then. I have sold tubes and received payment via international money order many a number of times. The only problem I have had is that some US people have sent me US money orders !!! (this despite them carrying a large warning that they are not negotiable outside the US)
Hey Fran,Thanks for the clarification. I certainly understand where you're coming from, as I've been there myself:-0! You are indeed correct about the long wait times and all the extra hassle. That's why I cannot for the life of me, understand why some of these folks don't just go with Paypal! Maybe there's a reason from their end that I haven't yet considered - keeping them away from this service..? I know it used to have a bad rap, but since it's been taken over by Ebay, things (I believe) have been much better! In other words, it's probably a much safer bet nowadays (under new management) then it was before... People were having A LOT of problems!! Anyhow, I've faced and dealt with similar problems in the past and can see exactly where you're coming from. Sending cash or anything non-traceable to places in other countries you've never heard of, where the seller claims they cannot accept personal checks or International Money Orders is a great risk at best!
Here's where I'm confused -
You said: "Maybe if I see those "new" AX7s posted enough times - I'll send a check."
Were you serious? I take it you were kidding here..? I would have to say that this auction looks and sounds like one of the sketchiest auctions I've ever encountered on ebay - a money swallower:-0! In fact, since the last auction where they had them priced at $40.00 AU (Double the price of the First auction), they've raised the bid price once again to $60.00 AU!!! I would stay FAR away from these folks if I were you:-]
Thanks and stay safe out there!!

Hi Brian - I looked at the last two auctions by the same seller for these tubes and they were $26.30 and $13.15 US dollars each for four tubes. The latest one is set up as only BIN for a few cents less that $40 US for four. I don't have money to throw away but was thinking about asking if they'd sell two for $20.I'll probably not do anything though. I really don't need them and not into rolling. The last time I did all that was looking for tubes for my preamp. Once I got it sounding as good as the old one did 25 years ago I made sure I have plenty spares and not really into playing around much with anything. It's just that I get these impulses every once in a while and try to chalk them up to learning experiences. Naa - I really don't need them and in fact loosing interest while I type this. Although I might look to see if anyone has them advertised the same way???
Thanks for the feedback - "the truth is out there." Fran
