I have been enjoying my RM9 for the past 4 months. A real great amp. The biggest improvement has been in the rhythm section. Bass and drums feel like they are in the room. I have been using it with the Eh el34 fat bottles, RAM tubes for the front pair and NOS 70's Russian tubes for the back pair. First I am wondering how much of a difference a better pair than the Russians would make. And second, what upgrade can I do to get more out of the upper mids and high end. They seem to be pushed back more as the music gets busy....
Follow Ups:
Mark Maloof should be along shortly with the mod list, but there is much you can do if you're ambitious. The RM-9 has good iron, so tweaking is pretty worthwhile.Perhaps start by upgrading the rectifier bridge with FREDs. Then Black Gates for the power supply and if you're feeling flush, REL TFT Exoticas for the coupling caps...
You want that front pair to be the well matched Rams, my back pair are a NOS Russian set as well, and these seem to make little difference.
I'm in Southern California. Is there anyone local that does these mods, or is it DIY only??
Anybody who does tube mods could do these... It's very easy to work on the RM-9, quite a simple design. The only problem is all those big caps don't fit in the cabinet. So, remove the bottom plate and then support the amp on footers or spikes to provide clearance.
If you're going this far, consider replacing the RCA's jacks and maybe the binding posts, and perhaps upgrade internal signal path wiring to silver.
Try either some Herbie Tube dampers or some Herbie footers for isolation. Or both.
