Hi kind folk ,Just wondeing have some old tube gear still works but smells was told the caps might contain PCBS these are old brooks mono 2a3 amps and a few vintage radios .Thxs for your time .Kloss
Follow Ups:
PCB's are only in oil capacitiors, not in electrolytics,
or regular wax/paper or plastic ones.Generally you are going to see oil capacitors in
commercial & ham radio transmitters, industrial motors &
electronics, and some homebrew gear. There aren't
any IIRC in old Brooks, and your typical table radio
won't have any, either.
I once attepmted to drill the guts out of a Can Capacitor as part of a restoration project... The "guts" were flying everywhere - I did this in a standup shower (to allow for the mess), but I knew what I was breathing in was not quite "right!" I tried not to take in too much, but I wasn't wearing a mask or anything. The Can and its guts originated from the early sixties. Bottom line - It didn't work out and I made a big mess! I was able to get some empty cans for the resto project soon after this - thank god! Anyway, I may have gotten myself into some trouble...Don't try this at home!
Kloss,If you are smelling this strong "PCB" odor while the unit is playing, stop playing it. I've seen plenty of older amps, where the cap can pops and all the guts spill onto the chassis. A world of a mess.
If those cans are older than 25 years old, better think about replacing them with hopefully new can or a replacement cap filter board
