they seem to be a bit fat in the bass and have no extreme highs in my phono stage. The mid range is pretty good tough. Very quiet and dynamic.
Follow Ups:
It is very quiet but its high is a bit too rough/brittle to me. I prefer the Svetlana 12AX7 to EH in my amp (in common cathode stage driving 300B).
One caveat about Svetlana 12AX7 .... hum with ac fed heaters.
Yes, I heard and was warned. But mine is on DC.
I figured yours was dc otherwise it probably would be humming .... I was trying to give a heads up to the initial poster in case he didn't know.
I've tried these in a variety of gear. My reference is the smooth plate Telefunken 12AX7. The EH 12AT7 does not have the inner detail, transparency, neutrality, and quietness that the TFK posseses. But, the EH gives me decent balance, one whose negatives are generally subtractive. I don't find the EH to be as droopy in the treble as the JJ. And the sound is a little mroe stable, versus the standard EI 12AX7.Given that the EH is cheap an readily available, get ones that have good triode balance, and that are low in noise and microphony. The EH, IMO, is a good buy, a serviceable tube. It should hold most users over until they can afford the pricier stuff. Or, if your equipment uses a whole bunch of 12AX7, you'll never be able to find 8 matched SP TFKs, so just go with the Electro Harmonix, and move on to other aspects of the system.
Yes, my experience with them was much the same - not outstanding, but not awful either. I thought the Sovtek 12AX7LPS was considerably better sounding than the EH valve.
