Just got a couple of JJ KT77s to try in my amp.
Very balanced tube across the whole frequency range.
Bass is a little less rich but
better defined than my SED KT88s.
Mids are slightly forward but
not as much as the VA EL34s and
better nuanced than the KT88s.
Highs are more extended and airy
reminding me of the GT KT66s.
Less MacroDynamics than the KT88s while
MicroDynamics are clearer and more distinct
but only noticed upon direct comparison
and not enough to notice otherwise.
A more intimate presentation rather
than the KT88s bolder presentation.
Highs are a bit much on bright recordings
but on more sedate/dull recordings they
really bring liveliness to the recording.Compared to the VA EL34s -
Better extension on both ends for a more
equal presentation of the frquency spectrum.Compared to the GT KT66s -
Bass that the KT66s can't touch and
most of the highs that KT66s do so well.Compared to the SED KT88s -
This one is really too close to call.
The KT77s are so neutral and refined while
the KT88s are so natural and rich/organic.
I will probably switch between the two
depending on the recording selection.
For an example :
Michael Buble sounds great with the KT77s.
While Eurythimics are made for the KT88s.That's my take on the KT77s in my amp
(SE with a 6J5GT driver and no feedback).
All in all a very nice tube.
Follow Ups:
have fun MR. DAN LOUD AUDIOnut.Big Peace, and of course forgiveme just the best of all worlds too late with too little sleep and way not enough nnot near enough hot chocolate.
Dan
I found exactly the same results you did and the JJ kt77 reminds me more of a good 6L6gc or kt66 than that of an el34 in the high frequencies and upper mids. Its very linear and has a very nice power curve and I know it appears more lean than a kt88 but I always compare the tubes in optimal amps for each tube.
What impeadance are you running in your SE amp?
MichaelI actually designed the amp for the KT66s.
But found the SED KT88s more to my liking.
Then I bought a pair of JJ KT77s to try.OPT are Silk 5K 12 Watts @ 100mA
The current is ~55mA with KT66s and
62mA with KT88s and EL34/KT77 in between.
They all have decent loadlines.
The KT77 being close to max disapation
and the KT88 being just cruising along.
Maybe why the KT88s sound more relaxed.
Be sure the KT77's have had time to break in. Ei KT90 like, with a bit less power.
Yes I could tell after a few hours
they sounded much better.
Less piercing highs and smoother mids.
Bass came into focus too.
How many hours do you think they need?
beg, borrow, buy, but don't steal some EI KT90 Series II. Much like the KT77's but more oooomph.
Actually I had to sell my quad
to afford to finish this amp.
Pretty subjective of course, but I'd say about 20 before it seemed there was no more change.
