When a cap says "660 volts peak", but does not say whether they mean AC or DC, is there a convention for which they mean?

if you posted a picture of the cap it might help. if it's a nonpolar cap, possibly with oil sloshing around inside, it's probably AC.
It's a big oil cap. Whats the conversion from AC to DC ratings, times 1.4?
it depends. I think it was ASC that calculated it by multiplying by 2 to account for positive and negative voltage, then by root 2 for rectification.
