In Reply to: Same thing - 'a' is for anode - the high class word for "plate" (nt) posted by Allen Wright on March 30, 2007 at 01:50:39:
Allen,
I'm really offended by your comment about the relationship between Ra and Rp. I've been using Ra for many decades and now I find out that I have been using the 'high class' Rp. One refers to the electronic aspect (a) and the other the physical aspect (p). Which is the more appropriate for an electronis device would you say? Rp, good grief. Make the case!

...a fraction of an ohm - so my vote goes to your choice of "anode" - at least if I was a gambling man.
Anode = ascent , cathode = descent.Plato used anodos to mean "progress towards enlightenment"
Mark,Because we are all enlightened in this forum, anode is clearly the correct term.
There is no other term for 'cathode'. Cathodes came much later that the term 'anode'. But on the other hand what were the terms used for early batteries? Anyone knowledgeable in early electrics? Perhaps a visit to the Encyclopedia Britannica' would help.
Well, the 1915 EB has no entry for anode or cathode. The batteries of the time had 'negative poles' and 'positive poles'. In a 1923 American book I find the terms 'anode' and 'cathode'. The use of 'anode' instead of 'plate' is surprising. I wonder when the change to 'plate' happened, why, who, etc..
