as a voltage amp. Preamps are voltage amps by and large depending on how much cable you want to drive. It's more of a current amp or kind-of in a quazi limbo territory. Guitar amps use it for a "unique sound". It's a good constant current driver and would make a good CCS. It makes a decent totem pole output stage. The really stellar voltage gain audio tubes are the 12ay7/6072A, 6sn7 family (6J5,7N7,VT52),6DJ8 family(7308,6922). Ray

The 12at7 is great because in one single stage it can be both a decent voltage amp, and drive some current, say 10ma. This makes the tube a perfect driver for a KT88.
"It's a good constant current driver and would make a good CCS." How would you use a triode as a CCS?
I can't post copyrighted material here. Ray

Thanks, all I was asking for is a short explanation (even a hint) of how it can be done with a triode. I'm only familiar with pentodes in that role - plus SS, of course. :}
Coming off the plate with lots of degeneration in the cathode. Very common in Tek scopes.
Depends on how you run it. I get superb results using it as a medium swing (10-20V) voltage amplifier, but I actually bothered to play with operating points and take a ton of spectra. And I also tested a very wide range of versions, ranging from the Genelex B739 to the GE6201 to the modern JJ oddballs.That said, the Tek versions are nothing special. Not the worst (6201 wins that one), just middle-of-the-pack.
Okay, I'll bite. I find the 6201 the best for me (runing valvo hamburg) and all of the standard 12at7 horrid so far. Which ones do you like?
Current production JJ. Far and away better than any NOS I've tried. And there are some pretty good NOS out there...
Mahatma and everyone,
I'm trying to fix a trace of glare and harshness I'm getting with new EH 12AT7 inputs on my PP amps (Manley Snappers EL34). The amps have about 70 hours on them, and have improved a lot since new but seem to be pretty steady now. 12AT7 is being used as phase splitter into GE7044, so I guess the triode sections should be matched. Will the JJ be appropriate for this and smooth out that glare? Or will I need an old Genelec or something more expensive?
Thanks
Rich
certainly these are very good 12at7s. Much better than you would find trying to buy new old stock and sorting them your self. A lot of the sorting work has already been done. Harmon Kardon Citation 1 preamp owners would be very interested.
