something DIY that I haven't thought of? Obviously I'd prefer a source for some nice NOS 1/4 inch ceramic caps at a reasonable price (under $3.00 each) but everywhere that I've looked, the caps cost in excess of $6.00 each. Is there a small spring loaded hose clamp kind of deal that I could cover with a rubber boot or something, at least for breadboarding? I'd love to hear of some homemade devices that test the imagination. What did the cave man do for his grid/plate caps before they invented ceramics? Thanks for your support, regards, wpod
Follow Ups:
for quick n' dirty top plate connections, just use some cheap Radio Shack alligator clips.
breadboarding?Lots of things will work for almost free
A length of solid copper wire, AWG 18 - 14, wrapped into a spiral slightly smaller than the cap will fit very tight. You can solder your lead to this.
One time in a bind I made a grid cap by flattening a small piece of copper plumbing pipe, and then forming it into a cylinder around the shaft of a screwdriver... I drilled a little hole to solder a wire on to, and it worked like a charm.
If you're really in a hurry, just solder the grid wire straight to the top of the tube - it's solder up there anyway, it will work perfectly fine, and it's not a huge deal to re-solder one connection in a few years when you change tubes.
Fair Radio has 'em - $5 for 5 or $1.19eaworth getting for the catalog alone
Fuse clips? The printed circuit type cost pennies...
