ScottHow about something simple ... reverse the tubes.
The 6H30 for gain and 6N1P for the CF.
Keep the 6H30 cathode resistor the same and
keep the 6N1P cathode resistor the same.
If they are different then switch them.

Dan:I tried your suggestion and it lowered the volume at maximum attenuation by about half; clearly, I was mistaken in how much excess attenuation there was. Looks like total attenuation of 18 to 24 dB is more like it.
That means I'm back to the original question: is it better to replace one or both of the 6N1P and 6H30 tubes per channel with something else, or should I put a resistor or T-pad at the input or output?

Scott
ScottIf you still have too much gain (~7.5) then
I think you need a preamp without gain.
Try bypassing the preamp go from source to amp.
If this is not too low then go for a passive preamp.
If it's really loud then go for a TVC.
If it's about right the resistive would be fine.
If you NEED more tubes just use the CF second stage.
Remove the first stage tube and put a .1uFd cap
from the volume pot to the grid of the second stage.
.
To infinity and beyond!!!
