Dear all,
I am building a single ended stereo amp with EL84 trioded and 6SL7, current draw about 90mA. The PTX has a 5V 3 amp secondary for rectifier but I like the filament glow of the 6BY5GA, will it be work to use 5V filament supply for it? Any harm to the tube?
Thank you.

Gary Pimm wrote about using 5v secondaries for other 6.3v heater damper diodes (with the benefits of a slower start up), so it ought to also work with the 6by5ga. I was surprised at how hot the 6by5ga gets.
As it is it doesn't like anything over a 10uF cap, preferably 8uF. De-rated, who knows what it'll take. Despite being beefy looking, it's actually quite wimpy and hardly better than a EZ81.
Andy,The 6BY5 can handle a little more current, which is of some concern. What's really of interest to me is how the 2 types compare in the forward drop dept. Do you happen to know? I'm looking at a pseudo choke I/P filter (cLC). So, a low limit for the 1st filter cap. value is a non-issue.

I can't remember figures, but I know that the forward drop was more than the single damper diodes I also use like the 6AU4. should be in the literature, I think? Andy
