Yes I've tried it as a SE power tube in class A. Doesn't sound bad at all, but haven't had a chance to compare with other DHTs in the circuit. Doesn't have a lot of power though .. Probably just about okay for my 95dB fostex in a small room . I plan to use it as a driver next. You had better have efficient speakers to use it.
Maybe others can provide some more meaningful subjective opinions

What I am wondering is whether someone knows what the mu gm and rp are when the 46 is wired as a "tetrode" (OK, it is not really a tetrode, but saying it this way makes my meaning clearer). As an SE output, you no doubt wired it as a triode. My favorite web site - NJ7P - and other data sheets give the 46's specs for Class A triode wired service and Class B "tetrode" wired service, but not Class A tetrode wired (dual grids wired together). I assume it would have higher gain and higher rp, like a pentode.
I am looking around for higher gain DHTs for voltage gain stage service.
The best spot for a 46 is a driver or possibly an OTL linestage. The 3a5 is ok but microphonic. It does not have too much character and just a bit strident but can work with the right tube compliment. I just got a Music Angel 3A5-2A3-300B set for playing around.
I can say that the 3A5 works extremely well in this circuit, better than it has any right to for the price I paid. I did axe the Solen caps on the 3A5 for AN copper foils which worked very nicely with the 3A5 character. I personaly like single triode DHT's lot's of nice ones to choose from.

It's OK for microphonics in a diff pair and I use three rubber rings on it. It is just a bit sharp, and not as euphonic as the best globes, but it's a damn fine tube and ridiculously cheap - you can find them for a couple of dollars. they probably out-perform 6SN7s with the right filament supply (current source)
Perhaps a 3A5 dual triode DHT with a gain of 15 ( http://www.nj7p.org/Tube4.php?tube=3a5 ) might work for you, judging from some threads on DHT drivers. No personal experience with this tube, sorry.
Good thought. I have been eyeing dual triodes of that ilk. I have some 4A6Gs -- mu of 20 -- and 1j6s. 1G6 is mu 30.
