I've been looking for a cassette deck for my vintage system and now have a line on a local Nakamichi 700. Can anyone tell me anything about these such as approximate value, usability etc?
I've only had very low-end decks in the past, and that was 20 years ago.
Follow Ups:
Great deck! No metal compatibility, but how many of those do you see....As said before, replace belts. It LOVES belts. When it is turned on, they are always spinning.
Also, it is constructed using plug in cards. Many decks appear defective. A little contact cleaner and its fixed.
Hello, Doug!I have one of each version of the Nak 700, series I and series II, that is.
Nice decks!
Basically very heavy behemouths, designed to work best in a vertical position. If you open them up, there is enough space inside for a picnic lunch for five people, but they can sound terrific, if properly maintained.
The controls sometimes get gritty and need to be sprayed out and belts should be replaced with new, if possible.
The oddball thing about the 700 "Tri-Tracer" was that even though it was a large, well-made deck, it was not suitable for 19" rack mounting. It is a very long deck, you know!
Anyway, cassettes go in the loading slot sort of upside-down and bass-ackwards, you know!
The machine has a "beacon" feature which theoretically allows for accurate adjustment of azimuth.
Heck, go for it if you get one cheaply!
Or, stop by my house in Berkeley and for an outlay of very little $$$, I will even help you load them both into your vehicle of choice.
This goes for anybody who is interested in my decks and lives within the SF Bay Area!
Thanks for all the information! I'll post if I end up getting it.
HelloI suppose you are referring to the Nakamichi 700 Tri Tracer or 700II, not to the 700 ZXL or ZXE
My opinion:
Supposing that it works well I would buy it for no more than 50 - 70 Euros/dollars.
Otherwise, if preserving the vintageness of your system is not absolutely prioritary, and considering that you haven't discovered the 'good cassette' sound, I would look for a better deck. Nothing less than a three head mid 80's nakamichi. Like a 582, 482, BX-300, CR-3, CR-4, LX-5. They should be more reliable (maybe the BX-300 is not due to the famouse idler wheel missengeneering). If you can test them before you buy, do it. We are talking about very aged devices.
This will make you discover the sound quality of NAKAMICHI and you will recover the time lost, like I'm doing these days.
There are other brands, with good decks. Post here asking for advice if you find something else.
Peace
