I was told that Maxell's are a better tape than TDK but i have the chance to purchase a fairly big lot of NOS brand new 1987 TDK SA tapes and was wondering if they are just as good as Maxell XLII?Thanks,Augustin..

Why don't you own some of both?
Generally, if I had an opportunity to buy a bulk NOS 1987 TDK SA I would buy them in a jiffy. BUT, before buying a whole lot, I would
buy 5% consisting of a random samples and would bring them home for inspection and testing.Any tape no matter how well manufactured can be ruined with inadequate storage. High humidity, high heat, magnetic flux etc.
If it is "take it or leave it" deal, I would inspect the boxes and the wrpappings - is there any sign of dried out moisture (e.g. cardboard box being rough on some parts of the package, wrinkled wrapper etc. I've seen it before).
I think they're both quite good. I don't know if one really is better than the other in terms of sonics. It depends which one is closer to the tape your deck is aligned for.I think the reason I prefer TDK a bit over the Maxell is that I've never gotten one with a defect, and they seem to wear a bit better. I've had a few Maxells develop dropouts and such, but it's a very low percentage.
