My old man ( he is old, too) has cassettes and some cds. He needs a new cassette deck and I am looking for recommendations for a single well, good solid deck. Is there such a thing still being produced.? Any suggestions. All help appreciated. Thank you. Norm
Follow Ups:
that since he is in and out of hospital lately I will get him a new one, I don't want to get a good used one that then goes south. I searched around and found the tascam 102 MKII. It's more expensive than some others but it seems bullet proof and they still make it. The denon drm 555 didn't have the best reviews and the yamaha mentioned below is no longer available. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again. Norm
Hey Gonzo.Yup, if I were determined to buy a new deck, I'd probably go with the TASCAM too. I didn't know they were still making that one. Good call!
I have 3 TASCAM decks (two 122s and a 238 Syncaset) & they're bulletproof & sound great.
.
but I just watch ebay for a Tascam, Sony esp ES, or such. Very cheap on ebay.Nakamichi is what I'd buy, but it is a bit fidgety if too old. My 2nd hand 682ZX is way better in all aspects vs. any new deck, purchased in 1987. Had some belts replaced and there is a whrrr sound which is some mild issue somewhere with start up (goes away in 10 seconds).
Gonzo!!I was in exsctly the same position 12 months ago. The best to be had, new, was the Yamaha KX-393. But fear not - it's a robust unit with great performance and they won't be disappointed. The tape trim is a wonderful tool for tuning in those older tapes that your folks want to get the best out of.
They can be had if you hunt around - especially via the net.
Check J&R. They usually have a pretty good selection of mostly dual well. Right now there is a Denon single. I've bought a few things from them and they're pretty reasonable.
Suggest you look at a pro sound dist. A great place for decks is a dist. in the suburbs of Milwaukee. www.fullcompass.com Good Luck.
Hey Gonzo. There are a few dubbing decks at a link at the bottom, but no single-well models.
If it were me, I'd look around for a good, clean used model. Most of the older decks were built better and it'll definately be cheaper. The 2-head single-well decks are a steal on eBay nowadays.
Cheers & good luck,
Bobbo :-)
