Very few decks have IEC equalization
Follow Ups:
This project isn't about making thousands of tapes for a mass market. It's about making limited production runs of really good albums the best way we know how. We figure to make only about 200 serialized copies of each title.IEC EQ takes better advantage of modern tape formulations than NAB EQ which was developed for 1949 vintage tape. Thus using IEC EQ is an important ingredient in delivering the best possible sound, which is what the Tape Project is all about. From a quick google search it looks like Otari MX-5050s have an IEC EQ switch, as does the Revox A77, Studer B67 and 807. I have also published specs for a very inexpensive DIY IEC EQ playback preamp based on a Seduction phono preamp. And of course the plan is to offer a production version of the preamp shown above as well.
Our customer base includes - but it certainly not limited to - high end manufacturers and distributors who will use the tapes for reference recordings for evaluation and demonstrations. As an example EAR will be demoing with our tapes at CES, as will TAD. And as I mentioned I get e-mails frequently from folks who are into open reel tape and/or who have very high resolution systems who have requested being put on a pre order list.
Probably makes a lot of sense for them to use your software for demos.Fortunately all of my tape equipment can also play IEC.
MRL will probably sell more IEC repro tapes than they have in years.
Good luck in the endeavor.
Did I accidentally call you Charles Hansen? My apologies!Conversations with a couple of competitors after we had demoed with tape at past shows has gone something like:
"You're using tape to demo your system? That's an unfair advantage!"
