Hi all,I'm looking at buying a good non Nak deck with dolby S and was looking at the Yamaha 580SE. This deck has the play trim feature. Is this feature the same as adjusting the azimuth to take into account tapes recorded on various deck.
Follow Ups:
Yamaha's play trim is not a speed adjustment. It is a feature that boosts or cuts high frequency response on playback to compensate for differences in head azimuth and frequency response of tapes recorded on other machines. There are owners manuals online that explain the operation of this feature in more detail, such as this one:

Hope this helps.Best regards,
Mike

NoAzimuth adjustement has nothing to do with play trim.
Play trim changes only the speed. it is very unusual to find a (bad) deck that records tapes that need to be slowed or accelerated in other decks to listen properly.
Azimuth is another story. It is quite common to have decks slightly misaligned. But most of the times it is not a problem. If you plan to listen to old tapes recorded on a single unit that was not properly aligned. You may need a manual adjustement. But Beware!! you can misalign an aligned deck. you would need some sort of measurement instrument (I use my pc) to align it again.
There are almost no decks with automatic or manual assisted azimuth adjustement, apart from some naks. Most of the times you do it with a screwdriver carefully on a screw on the head block.
Here in europe. Yamaha KX580 is a bit harder to get. It is easier to find a Yamaha 690.I would also consider Pioneer CT-S900. They are very popular and can be found cheap (Mine 48 Eur). Or one of the many SONY. They produced a lot of decks with dolby S, bad and good ones. Try TC-K800 series and above.
I've got the pioneer, a SONY TC-KA6ES, a TEAC V-8030S and the pioneer wins in cost/performance.
PLay trim does not adjust tape speed, that is absolute nonsense. It's a kind of pre-Dolby treble control.
Hi rotovater,Thanks for explaining the play trim. I've got a lot of old tapes and some recorded on a denon unit.
I have a Nak ZX9 which does not play my older tapes well but it does sound great with tapes recorded on it.
You are lucky to be in Europe where there seems to be an active market for tape decks. I'm in Australia and good decks are hard to come by.
Thanks again.
The compatibility issue with naks is/has been discussed here many times.
You can do a search of previous post. I'm no expert on that.
