My first guess, based on your description, would be a problem with the bias oscillator. I would always suggest first to check the tape path but since we don't know if the problem is electronic, that would be futile. Feed a signal to the input jacks, put in a tape and hit record. Follow the signal until it stops and go back one step. Good luck.

was this sudden, any warning?I know you know, but is this with all tapes old or new (check if tabs are punched out on the tops).
Since I got it (recently). The tape motion sensor bulb needed replacement first, then I discovered the recording problem. It records a layer of rumble with occasional peaks of the source input making some extra noise. If that makes sense.
