In Reply to: Do Maxell cassette's dirty heads faster than TDK? posted by Anthony on November 14, 2006 at 20:45:50:
That's a broad question, because there are so many tape formulations. For example, there are different Maxell XLII tape formulations- something called epitaxial (cobalt ferrite) and black hematite. Those two tapes are different.
Now, what TDK to compare them to ? SA or SA-X (double covered SA)
Also, there are Maxell XL-II tapes and XL-IIS tapes made in Japan and made elsewhere.
Perhaps the better question would be :
Does Maxell XL-IIS tape dirty up the
heads in tape decks any faster than TDK SA-X ?Comparrison is valid only if the tapes are used under the very same conditions and brand new.
Follow Ups:
Those are the two tapes i was wondering about, sorry.Does Maxell XLII-S dirty up tape heads faster than TDK SA-X?Thanks..
I have found that the Maxell XL-IIS tape made in England is inconsistent in quality and sometimes does dirty up the heads more than Japanese made TDK SA-X
I like XL-IIS because of the sturdy shell, but with my decks it does sound 'darker'.
Since both tapes are discontinued, perhaps best bet is to stock up whatever you find.
Most of the Maxells I have were made in Japan, some in Mexico. The Japanese ones don't seem any different from the TDKs.
