and how long your cables are and what the impedance of your system is. If it's tube and unbuffered then it can be unforgiving. If it's transistor and lower impedance then more forgiving on distance. If on the other had you have a pro tube deck with input and output transformers then you can succeed very well. Tell us what you have. Are you going to tape from vinyl using a phono preamp. etc? It's not that hard to add buffering in the form of a transformer or a cathode follower stage.

Follow Ups:
I have a Teac A-6300 and will be recording mostly from vinyl with a Hagerman Bugle phono stage. Everything will be close by--interconnects will be around a meter long. The preamp I was looking at was Hagerman's Clarinet. However, if I'll have to add a buffer, I should stick with something used...
The input to your Teac is also solid state and relative low impedance so I wouldn't think you would have any trouble with 1 meter cables. A tape monitor switch could be added but they are inclined to cause crosstalk if the switch is small. Ray Hughes

Thanks for the info. While most of my recording will be from vinyl, some will be from CD. I don't even know how the output will be from that--I'm sure I'll have a different player and a DAC. I suppose I should aim for low impedance?
