I am thinking of buying a cassette deck to use in my home system. I understand the Nak is one of the best, but I don't know which one to get. Could use some recommendations. Will be doing mostly play back of pre-recorded tapes. I want to take advantage of all the inexpensive source material there is out there.
Thanks
Vince
Follow Ups:
I own a Nak & have for years (CR2A). They are well made & sound great. That said, if you can find a later Sony or Marantz machine with Dolby S, I would go for that. Most Cassette machines are going for cheap (aside from Naks), because it is a dead technology. For example I picked up a Awia ADF800, which was a nice 3 head machine in its day, for $100 Canadian (~$75US). Sounds dare close to my CR2A. So look around & don't restrict yourself to Nak tape decks.
What about this?

Nah, I want to stay away from the cheap junk. :)
my fave is 682ZX for good deal. Under $300 to 350, near the CR 7/9, maybe better than Dragon soundwise, less gadgets. Saw about 6 on ebay over 6 mo, and one of the guys here (digital modder) had a perfect one for $350 on AgoN and another inmate sold one on ebay.I own one and it's marvelous. But with Naks, be prepared to fix them up.
Vinnie,Naks are contagious, I have serveral and plan on buying more. You are absolutelly right, for $1000 you can buy NAK and hundereds of tapes. I got many for free for just asking friends and acquaitances. Also, you can buy lots of hunfdreds of tapes on ebay dirt cheap.
I do not know your budeget, but there is a NAK for EVERY budget.
Here is what I recommend:
Cheaper:Nak 600 - no frills good machine.
LX-5 beautiful 3 head RX303
Mid-priced:680ZX, 682ZX, RX505 CR4
Higher priced:CR5, CR7, ZX7 Zx9
If your budget is on a shoestring, get top of the line Onkyo Integra, sounds very close to NAK. e.g. TA-2800
Thanks for the info Bob. I will start looking for those. What is your opinion of the MR-1 & CR-1A naks?
you can't Tape/Source monitor. But if want it for listening to pre-recorded tapes you will be impressed as even regular commercial tapes sound great and audiophile cassettes superb.
Buying used you may have to adjust the playback azimuth to get full frequency response.
The Nakamichi decks are better optimized if it's being used to playback the pre-recorded materials that were recorded by Nakamichi decks themselves.
